ENGINE

ADJUSTMENTS

NOTE:

WESTERBEKE recommends that the following engine

adjustments be peiformed by a competent engine mechanic.

VALVE

Retorque the cylinder

head

bolts before adjusting the

engine~

va/ves.

1. Remove the rocker cover

and

gasket.

Position

the

No.1

piston

Top

dead Center

(TDC)

its

compression stroke

and

adjust

the

# I and

exhaust

calves. While

facing

the

front

the

engine,

rotate

the

crankshaft

360"

clockwise

and

adjust

the

remaining

valves.

EXHAUST

3. Replace

the

rocker cover

and

the

rocker cover

gasket.

4. Adjust all

valves

0.012

(0.30mm)

with

the

engine

hot.

IGNITION

TIMING

Attach a digital timing light

the

spark plug

and

mark

the

front

crankshaft timing

groove

and

the timing

mark

the

scale embossed

the

engine's

front

cover.

Each

li!!Jing

mark

represents

2°.

TIMING

CRANKSHAFT

PULLEY

Start

the

engine

and

warm

the

engine to

its

normal

operating temperature.

Using

the digital timing light, check

the

ignition timing

first

with

the vacuum hose disconnected

from

the

distribu-

tor

and

then

with

connected.

Compare

timing

with

the

specifications

below.

Adjust

the

timing

needed.

TORQUING

THE

CYLINDER

HEAD

BOLTS

After

the

initial break-in period (approximately 50 hours),

the

cylinder

head

bolts should

re-torqued.

Tighten

the

cylinder

head

bolts

according

the

sequence

shown.

Make sure

the

engine

cold

when

this

done,

and

loosen

one

head bolt one-half tum

and

then

tighten

between

- 511b-ft

(60

-70

Nm).

Then proceed

the

head

bolt

the

sequence.

Tighten

the

(rocker cover stud)

securely.
