TIMING
BELT
INSPECTION
AND
REPLACEMENT'
1. Before removing the timing belt and timing belt
tensioner, rotate the engine crankshaft by hand and
align the three timing marks as shown in the
illustration.

CAUTION:
After
removal
of
the
timing
belt,
DO
NOT
rotate
the
crankshaft
or
camshaft;
the
pistons
will
damage
the
opened
valves.

TIMING
MARKS
NOTE:
If
the timing belt is
to
be reused, draw an arrow on
the belt pointing in the direction
of
the belts rotation.
Replace it
in
the same direction.

Inspection
1. Replace the timing belt
if
it is contaminated with oil,
grease or water.
2. Check for damage, wear, peeling, cracks or
hardening. Replace
if
suspect.
NOTE:
Never forcefully twist the timing belt; turn it inside
out or bend
it.

Tensioner
1.
Check the rotation
of
the timing belt tensioner pulley.
Check for play or abnormal noise.
NOTE:
Do not clean the timing belt tensioner with clean-
ing solvents.
If
dirty, use a clean rag
to
wipe it clean.
Avoid scratching the
suiface the belt travels over.

1. Check the gear teeth for any indication
of
damage,
wear, deformation, etc. Replace
if
any faults are
found.
Timing
Belt
Installation
1.
Check to ensure that the timing marks on the gears
are properly aligned with the marks on the case.
2. Loosely install the timing belt tensioner, locking bolt
and spring. Push the timing belt tensioner toward the
lock bolt
to
the left
as
far as it will go and then tighten
the locking bolt to temporarily hold the tensioner
in place.
